Loving Silently

“I’m coming over in 5 minutes. Get ready or we’ll be late for the movie!!!”

I rushed to the bathroom to do a makeup check, sprayed on my Bombshell by Victoria Secret perfume and lightly slapped on my cheeks to look a little more alive.

“Just friends, Lia. Just friends,” I reassured myself in the mirror. I whispered it a few more times before heading towards the living room to wait for him.

A familiar honk rang by the driveway and I was all out the door by the second. His black Ford Focus was parked still outside my house. I walked in big steps but polite enough for my skirt to not flare open. The walk from your door to your friend’s car is always awkward. It feels like you’re on a punished walk.

I opened the car door but hesitated to get in because of my skirt. I was wearing overalls with a line of buttons at the front. Any drastic movement from my legs will make the button near my thighs pop open and it would be pretty embarrassing for me to fix them.

“Noah? Don’t laugh okay, but there’s a high chance that my buttons will pop open once I get in the car,” I admitted embarrassingly.

By the look of his face, I knew he was confused about what I had just said. But knowing Noah, he’ll laugh anyways. He looked at me calmly but there was also a concerned look as I sat down awkwardly - down goes my butt first then in goes both my legs. Thank God no button popped. I slightly shuffle in my seat to adjust my seating position and not one, but two buttons popped unexpectedly, almost revealing my inner thighs.

I quickly scramble to button up and it kept popping open each time I popped them close. This skirt is ridiculous, I’m probably never wearing them again. Giving up on those hopeless buttons, I resorted to covering up my thighs with my handbag.

Noah chuckles lightly at me and says, “Ready?”

“Yup,” I replied while popping the letter p in my response.

When we reached the cinema, Noah went to collect our movie tickets from the counter. We’re watching Taken. To be frank, I’m not a fan of action movies but if Noah says it’s gonna be good, then it’s going to be good.

I wasted no time waiting for him, so I went to get the popcorn and drinks. Having two popcorns in my hands, I struggled to take the drinks with me. I placed the popcorns down on the counter and tried to pick all four items at once. Nope, didn’t work. Alright Lia, it’s time to be strategic with the fingers. I moved my hands left and right, positioning my fingers at the right angle to fit all four items in my two hands.

“Wow, you really think you can take all four with your tiny alien hands?” Noah teased.

“Nope, I was just going to take what’s mine,” I said and playfully took two popcorns. The smell of the caramelized popcorn instantly went through my nose and I couldn’t wait any longer to indulge in them. I dipped my face into the bucketful and fished one out with my teeth.

Before I could bite it, Noah came close to my face and took the popcorn away with his mouth. Our lips brushed fairly lightly, leaving a faint lipstick mark from mine to his bottom lip.

“Yum!” he cheered as he chewed. “Come on, I’ll grab the sodas.”

My mouth was still left open from what happened.

Wait, what? Did we just came close to kissing? Was that technically a kiss?

I’m losing my mind.

I quickly closed my mouth and acted as if nothing had happened. Nonchalantly, I cleared my throat and lightly sucked in my lips to lick the caramel that had coated my mouth.

It’s normal for best friends to act silly right?

Right?
